‘Religion And Science Are The Wings Of A Single Bird’

‘If religion were contrary to logical reason then it would cease to be a religion and be merely a tradition. Religion and science are the two wings upon which a man’s intelligence can soar into the heights, with which the human soul can progress. It is not possible to fly with one wing alone! Should a man try to fly with the wing of religion alone he would quickly fall into the quagmire of superstition, whilst on the other hand, with the wing of science alone he would also make no progress, but fall into the despairing slough of materialism…’

  1. That is strange…because my wife and I, both atheist, ‘fly’ in life just fine without religion or a god of any sort. We have high morals, standards and values…we love and respect one another…we honor and cherish each other and those around us…

All without a god or religion. Seems we’re flying just fine!

  2. Thanks for the comment- I am glad to hear that you are both fine:-) I personally do not believe that being an atheist means that one cannot have ‘high morals, standards and values’.

However what I do believe is that on a social and cultural level religion is a major source of the moral and spiritual values that even avowedly non-religious people profess.

For example in the West the apparently secular values of freedom of conscience and human rights seem to me to have a distinctly Christian flavour to them.

I think the problem for atheism on a cultural/social level comes when a society has become so detached from spriritual values that morally it is ‘running on empty’ and a vacuum is created which is swiftly filled by consumerism, extremist politics and/or pseudo-religious bigotry.
