Testing Times For Freedom Of Religion In Indonesia

I am very concerned to read in www.asianews.it that the freedom of the Ahmadiyya Community to practice their religion in Indonesia has been curtailed due to pressure from extremist groups. This was despite the efforts of moderates including Former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid (better known as Gus Dur) and Muslim scholar Azyumardi Azra. Azyumardi Azra called on the Indonesian Ulema Council to rescind a ruling issued over twenty years ago declaring the Ahmadiyya teachings as heresy. He was reported in www.asianews.it as saying “If the state does not protect its citizens without distinction, anarchy will prevail; it has the duty to assure that all are free to practise their faith as stipulated by the Constitution.”
