‘To Know Thee And To Worship Thee’

I sometimes think prayer is a simple reminder of our relationship with the One from whom our plural existence has emanated.  So each day between the hours of noon and sunset (apart from when I forget..). I recite this short prayer revealed by Bahá’u’lláh for this purpose.

I bear witness, O my God, that Thou hast created me to know Thee and to worship Thee. I testify, at this moment, to my powerlessness and to Thy might, to my poverty and to Thy wealth. There is none other God but Thee, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting.

Short Obligatory Prayer

  1. I like to think of all the obligatory prayers, especially the short one, as “pledges of allegiance” to God. The language is full of judicial imagery such as “bear witness” and “testify” which makes me think of the Day of Judgement foretold in the Bible and the Quran. Baha’is believe the Day of Judgement refers to the present time where humanity as a whole is moving away from God.

Baha’is believe that the “judgement” refers, rather than to hell-fire and brimstone, but to whether those of us living in the present day choose to accept God’s newest Messenger for this time, Baha’u’llah, or not. Leading a life in accordance with Baha’u’llah’s Teachings brings us great joy and draws us nearer to God, while living a life in conflict with Baha’u’llah’s Teachings will not “send us to Hell” or anything, but will make us feel empty and down because we get further away from God. Of course God always loves every one of us no matter what, but we sometimes without realising put barriers up which limits the amount of God’s love that can reach us.

Saying this prayer daily helps us to remember how auspicious the Day in which we live is and so helps us to keep our steps on the straight path in line with Baha’u’llah’s Teachings. 🙂
